Podiatry Orthopaedics header

Being leaders in the prevention of lower extremity complications, Texas Diabetes Institute faculty’s awareness of diabetic risk factors is top of the line. This awareness has allowed physicians to prevent 85 percent of diabetic foot and leg amputations. At Texas Diabetes Institute, we provide care to patients with podiatric problems from basic nail care to post-op shoes and wheelchairs. Our close work with Orthotics, Endocrinology, Primary Care, Orthopaedics, Vascular and Radiology allows us to bring maximum care to our patients.

The following conditions may occur on your feet if proper care is not taken.

Skin Changes
Dry feet, which cause peeling and cracking, are a sign of diabetes.

Calluses
Build up faster on feet of people with diabetes. May get very thick, break down, and turn into ulcers if not cared for.

Foot Ulcers
These occur over the ball of the foot or on the bottom of the big toe. Neglecting ulcers causes infections and leads to loss of limbs.

Poor Circulation
This makes your foot less able to fight infection and heal. Diabetes causes vessels to narrow and harden. If your foot changes color, shape, or just feels different, notify your physician immediately.

Tips On Caring For Your Feet
Keep blood sugar in control.
Wash your feet every day. Dry carefully between toes. Check your feet for sores, calluses, red spots, cuts, swelling and blisters.

Never walk barefoot!
At the first sign of infection or inflammation, see your physician.
